The thesis of Human Diversity is that advances in genetics and neuroscience are overthrowing an intellectual orthodoxy that has ruled the social sciences for decades. The problem is that all three dogmas are half-truths. Le Corps redressé est d'abord une archéologie des façons de penser et de contraindre le corps depuis le Moyen Age. Georges Vigarello y propose une "histoire des tactiques diverses qui ont cherché à redresser les morphologies". Dans un constant va-et-vient entre savoirs et pratiques, il mène une enquête à travers les représentations du corps, les exercices qui visent à assurer sa rectitude et les raisons qui font de celle-ci une exigence impérieuse.
Ce livre, le premier de Georges Vigarello, marque une rupture dans l'historiographie du corps. Imprégné de la culture des années 1970, il met en lumière un pouvoir, une domination qui tente d'encercler les individus en leur imposant des normes physiques infiltrant les morales et les psychologies. L'auteur marque en outre une seconde rupture en s'affranchissant des débats traditionnels sur l'opposition matière/esprit pour étudier très spécifiquement la manière dont chaque époque se représente le corps, son fonctionnement, son usage, sa sensibilité.
Il prend un sens nouveau aujourd'hui alors que l'affirmation de l'autonomie du corps, la redéfinition de l'intolérable et la dénonciation des souffrances psychologiques sont au coeur des questions de société. Cette démarche a inspiré toute l'oeuvre de Georges Vigarello : le Corps redressé est le livre de la révélation et de l'engendrement.
